10 Basic English Verb Flashcards with Japanese Meanings

Print ten basic English verbs with Japanese meanings and short example sentences. Free A4/Letter PDFs, an editable Excel list and a simple quiz-and-review routine.

This deck is for Japanese-speaking beginners learning English. Fronts show the verb; backs give its meaning in the example and a short sentence. It is not a complete curriculum, an official exam list or an audio pronunciation lesson.

Each PDF has two pages, front then back, making ten cards. No account or app is required to download and print.

The ten verbs and answers

Meanings are limited to the examples shown. For instance, take is used in take a photo, while hear refers to perceiving sound rather than deliberately listening.

FrontBack meaningExample
eat食べるI eat rice.
drink飲むI drink water.
read読むI read a book.
write書くI write a word.
go行くI go to school.
come来るPlease come here.
see見える・見るI see a bird.
hear聞こえるI hear music.
make作るI make a card.
take(写真を)撮るI take a photo.

Use the cards for a short quiz and review

  1. Read each front and back together first. If ten words are too many, start with the five cards from eat to go.
  2. Look only at the front and say its Japanese meaning, then check the reverse. Separate recalled cards from uncertain ones.
  3. Next, show only the Japanese meaning and ask the learner to write the English verb. Cover the example sentence because it contains the answer.
  4. Use the table above to check answers. Accept suitable paraphrases when checking meaning; compare spelling with the printed verb when checking writing. Revisit uncertain cards later and adapt examples to the learner.

Test one physical sheet before cutting

Match A4 or US Letter, then print both pages in portrait at 100%, using long-edge duplex. Do not add another pages-per-sheet setting. Before cutting, check that eat has 食べる on its reverse and that back text stays inside the front cut boundaries.

The inner margin is 10mm. This particular deck has not been physically print-tested. Preventing text clipping on another sample does not prove exact front/back registration. If the backs shift, measure with the check sheet and retest one sheet after any correction.

Edit the source for your own lesson

Change meanings or examples in Excel or the editor below. Copy only A2:B11 from Excel, excluding the header. Each back keeps its meaning and example together on one line. Editing the source does not change the downloadable PDF.
